When Butler went to university, she would continue to write in notebooks. Octavia Butler kept a notebook with her when she was ten where she would continuously write down her thoughts and ideas always making up stories. It was from that moment onwards that Butler learned how much she loved writing and the freedom of creativity that it bestowed upon her. She greatly disliked the ending and decided to write her own version and this began her journey of writing speculative fiction.
